Nature & Mission of the Church
Course description will be updated soon.
This course is part of the OLGC Extension Program which meets on THURSDAYS, not on Tuesdays.**
This will be a Socratic seminar offered to juniors and seniors to explore, to discuss and to better grasp the nature and mission of the Catholic Church. It will convene weekly for an hour and fifteen minutes.
The Fall semester will examine first the Scriptural roots of the Church followed by various readings of the Church Fathers from the death of the last Apostle, St. John the Evangelist, until the seventh or eighth century. The Spring Semester will focus on the important and pivotal twentieth century Church document promulgated by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council called the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, and selected portions from the books: Called to Communion by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger and The Splendor of the Church by Henri Cardinal De Lubac.
In preparation for each seminar, the students will be expected to read carefully and thoughtfully the assigned texts twice in order to better comprehend the whole of the reading versus the particulars. Usually a few questions will accompany the assigned reading in order to aid the student to identify first principles of the texts, to follow the argument, to note the key teachings and to facilitate interior reflection in preparation for the Socratic discussion. These will be a Pass or Fail grade rather than the student receiving a letter grade. The purpose of which is to emphasize comprehension versus academic grades or checking off the “homework box.”
The majority of the assessment and evaluation of a student will be based on his her participation in the Socratic discussion. A mid-term and final essay will be assigned.
> Nature of the Liturgy will be offered again in 2025-26.
