Sign Language with ASLU

Levels 1 and 2 will be available in one classroom as needed.
We will be using Dr. Bill Vicar’s online program of lessons to learn the beautiful gestural language of American Sign Language and its rich history. ASLU 1 will include a better understanding of deaf culture history throughout the first and second semesters. There will be two presentations: one each semester with a combination of signing and dialoguing to help the students' knowledge base with American Sign Language. This will build upon the Introduction to ASL and previous ASLU 1 courses.
Each lesson contains objectives, vocabulary, sentences, and a story using a two-week format which may be adjusted based on the class size. Basic prayers continue with the Glory Be and Sign of the Cross Hail Mary, and Our Father in class. ASL 1 will learn The Memorare with selected Psalms from Mass readings along with Lessons.
HOMEWORK
20-30 min each day or more; a minimum of 20 minutes a day of the online video instruction. (Most lessons are 40 to 50 minutes) Daily practice is very important.
Each bi-weekly lesson includes:
- Objectives
- Vocabulary
- Twenty practice/drill sheet statements
- Story (occurs with the second week of lessons)
- Discussion topics
Mastery is the goal. Be prepared to Sign your homework in class each week. Each lesson has ONLINE SELF STUDY QUIZZES to help with understanding the receptiveness of Sign Language. Expressiveness will occur during class time.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITY
Assist student(s) with online lessons and tutorials as needed. Use of computer for online lessons is required.
COURSE FEE: $120 pay-in-full / $132 payment plan

GRADE LEVEL: All grades
PREREQUISITES: None for high school. Recommended Introduction to ASL is helpful for middle school but is not a requirement.
CREDIT HOURS: 1 credit for high school students
